Gerrard Etc.
Gerrard is a British-American artist, currently based in South-East England.
Her interdisciplinary practice takes influences from her personal experiences. She re-tells these in multiple up-front works, which she refers to as “conversations” in the hopes that they will spark a dialogue that extends beyond the pieces themsleves. In these “conversations” she confronts issues surrounding the female experience, the formal education system and the human psyche. Using both materials as well as her own body, she creates narratives that invite spectators to ruminate on adolescence, sex, gender and the objectifcation of women. Gerrard aims to take the viewer from being a passive bystander to an active participant by immersing them within the work and challenging their understanding of society’s impactful role in the lives of young girls and women.
Her practice is ever-changing. She is passionate about experimentation and works in a range mediums from textiles to sculpture to filmmaking. She believes that by trialling different methods of visual storytelling and sharing these “conversations”, the art will encourage audiences to re-examine out-dated notions of what it means to be a woman.
